Venice confirm Stroppa's departure, Zanetti tipped to take over
Venezia made official on Monday the dismissal of Giovanni Stroppa, after a sixth consecutive defeat in Serie A, against Atalanta (1-3), according to several Italian media outlets.
Giovanni Stroppa is no longer the head coach of Venezia. The lagoon club made his departure official in a statement, as reported by the ANSA agency and TuttoMercatoWeb. This decision follows the defeat against Atalanta (1-3) on Monday, which marks the team's sixth loss in as many league matches, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
An expected decision
The coach's dismissal had been anticipated for several days. As early as Sunday evening, TuttoMercatoWeb mentioned a serious risk after the sixth consecutive defeat. The daily Corriere dello Sport indicates that the loss to Sarri's team proved fatal for the coach. According to the ANSA agency, this sixth defeat hastened the club's decision.
The candidates to replace him
Several names are already circulating to take over from Giovanni Stroppa. According to TuttoMercatoWeb, Zanetti would be in pole position. The same outlet also cites Nicola and D'Aversa as possible candidates. Calciomercato.it confirms that the trail leading to Zanetti is the most serious one.
A busy schedule
Venice, who have lost six of their last six Serie A matches, need to find a successor quickly. The next league match, against Napoli, was already being described as a possible last chance for Giovanni Stroppa before his dismissal, according to TuttoMercatoWeb. The club has not yet communicated on the timeline for appointing the new coach.
