Valencia appoint Javier Aguirre as head coach until end of season
An arrival made official
Valencia CF confirmed on Wednesday the appointment of Javier Aguirre as the new head coach of the first team, according to several Spanish and international media outlets. According to Europa Press, the club has reached an agreement with the Mexican coach until the end of the current season, with an option to extend his contract by an additional year. This information was confirmed by Estadio Deportivo, which specifies that the club at Mestalla reserves the option to extend its collaboration by a further season.
An experienced coach for a rescue mission
Javier Aguirre, nicknamed “El Vasco”, is returning to La Liga after his most recent spell in Spain with Mallorca in 2024, El Español reports. The newspaper El País describes him as a “man of instinct” to “save a great club”. Valencia CF, currently 19th in the championship, sacked their previous coach Carlos Corberan ten days ago, Foot Mercato reports. Since then, the club has been searching for a new coach to set the machine back in motion after a disappointing start to the season.
Contract details
According to Estadio Deportivo, Aguirre arrives until the end of the season to try to save the Valencian club, but the Mestalla board are reserving the option of extending his contract by an additional year. The Andalusian newspaper also specifies that the Mexican coach arrived more than a week ago as the club's new sporting director, after his release clause was paid. On its side, ElDesmarque reports an agreement with Pol Lorente's approval, and a contract until the end of the year with an additional year as an option.
Announcement widely reported
The official confirmation of Aguirre's appointment was picked up by numerous media outlets, including Mundo Deportivo, 20minutos, TuttoMercatoWeb, Calciomercato.com and Maisfutebol. The Mexican coach takes up his role in a delicate sporting context, with the club occupying a relegation position. The rest of the season will reveal whether this experiment will enable Valencia CF to recover.
