Fifa: Swiss federation withdraws support for Gianni Infantino
The Swiss Football Association (SFV) announced on Tuesday 30 September that it no longer supports Gianni Infantino in the March 2027 elections for the FIFA presidency. The information is reported by several media outlets, including L'Équipe, RMC Sport and So Foot.
A decision after an "exhaustive reassessment"
In its announcement, the SFV explains that it has carried out "an exhaustive reassessment of events over the last few months" and is questioning "the leadership, the governance, the..." of FIFA, according to Europa Press. The Swiss body doubts the governance and transparency of the world governing body, RTP Desporto specifies.
Criticisms of opening up to investors
According to Gazeta Esportiva, this withdrawal of support comes after criticisms were levelled at the project of opening FIFA up to private investors. This plan, which would have raised reservations within the Swiss federation, is presented as one of the reasons for this decision.
A crisis that is spreading
This withdrawal adds to a series of disaffections, referred to by RMC Sport as a "crisis at FIFA". The Swiss federation thus joins other bodies that would have decided to no longer support Infantino's candidacy, without the file specifying which ones.
The next deadline is set for the March 2027 elections, during which the incumbent president will seek a new term, now without the support of his own national federation.
