Vinicius' expulsion in the match against Villarreal is said to have angered Cucurella. According to Mundo Deportivo and ElDesmarque, the Real Madrid full-back addressed the referee with these words: 'I hope that if someone touches a single hair of mine, you will show the red card.' A reference to his hair to put pressure on the officials, reports ElDesmarque.

According to Estadio Deportivo, the expulsion would have angered the entire Real Madrid, from fans to players, including José Mourinho, who reportedly preferred not to speak to the press to avoid fueling the controversy. The club returned to LaLiga after the break.
