Bayern Munich: Neuer ruled out for Champions League clash in Stavanger

Manuel Neuer will not travel with Bayern Munich to Stavanger for the Champions League match against Viking FK. The goalkeeper and captain of the Bavarian club is feeling pain in his foot, explained coach Vincent Kompany, as reported by Sportschau. He will not train that day, the Belgian coach specified, cited by Transfermarkt.

A foot injury, not an exclusion

According to Die Welt, Neuer "feels something in his foot." This discomfort, which appeared during the league match on Saturday against Augsburg (2-2), is not linked to a sporting decision, several sources assure. Voetbal International indicates that the goalkeeper is not sidelined, but that he has a minor physical issue. The Dutch daily specifies that Neuer will not be able to immediately redeem himself for his disappointing performance on Saturday.

Urbig to start in place of Neuer

For this trip to Norway, Jonas Urbig is expected to be in goal. Transfermarkt, 90min, and Abendzeitung München agree on this point. The young goalkeeper, already tipped to start the match before the announcement of the withdrawal, will keep his place, according to these media.

The consequences of the match in Augsburg

This absence comes after a difficult match for Neuer. The goalkeeper made an error that led to the fastest goal in Bundesliga history, reports Abendzeitung München. The club would then have considered playing Urbig in Stavanger, before the foot pain settled the matter, according to the same outlet.

Sporting director Max Eberl backed the goalkeeper: "So far, the plan is working," he said, as quoted by Abendzeitung München. Neuer himself had admitted to having a "hunch" about who would start in Stavanger, reports Transfermarkt.
